Dementia

We are happy to report that we were awarded £120,000 in October 2010  by The City Bridge Trust, whose sole trustee is the City of London Corporation, to pilot a Dementia Development project.

Crossroads Care Bexley is part of the national network of Crossroads’ Care organisations providing breaks for people with caring responsibilities. We provide a range of care services to enable carers in Bexley to have a break from their caring responsibilities, knowing that the person they care for will be receiving high quality care from our trained staff.

The Dementia project aims to provide services to anyone with dementia – particularly those with specific needs.  It is not a requirement that you should have a ‘carer’.

Sarah Taylor is leading on this project as the  Dementia Development Officer. The main aim of the project is to identify individuals with Dementia in Bexley, particularly those belonging to minority ethnic communities, that are not receiving any ‘funded’ support services and to identify a number of priority individuals with whom to pilot a tailored package of support.

Sarah has also been mapping and identifying  gaps in services within Bexley and barriers that individuals may face when accessing services.

If you live in the London Borough of Bexley and you:

ü  .... are caring for a person that has Dementia and would like to be considered to receive a tailored package of care support.

ü  .... have Dementia and would like to be considered to receive a tailored package of care support.

ü  .... have experienced any difficulties in receiving support in your own home.

Our Open DayOpen Day - 30 July 2011

Crossroads Care Bexley and partner organisations held a Dementia Open Day on Saturday 30 July at The Pier Road Centre in Erith. Residents of Bexley that are affected by dementia and /or memory loss were able to pop in and find out about dementia and the services that are available in Bexley and surrounding areas.

Rock Sturt, BME (Black and Minority Ethnic) Service Development Officer at Alzheimer’s and Dementia Support Services, gave an excellent talk which raised awareness of dementia. He focused on BME issues which included the stigmas that some  communities can have towards dementia.

Attendees included individuals that had been diagnosed with dementia and people whose family members have been diagnosed with dementia.

They had the chance to ask questions about loved ones who had concerns about their memory loss and find out what support was available. The Mayor of Bexley, Councillor Ray Sams and Councillor David Hurt came along on the day.

Light refreshments were provided and all attendees were entered into a free prize draw for a hamper.

The day was an excellent forum to raise awareness of dementia and for individual’s affected to find out about services and support that are available. There was a very positive atmosphere on the day that encouraged individuals to share their experiences.
